#BecauseWeCare Forum- HIV Epidemic in 2017

Greetings Fam Bam!

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the #BecauseWeCare forum about HIV/AIDs. As someone working in healthcare I thought I knew enough about HIV/AIDs, but I was wrong. The facts and data I heard was staggering. I had no idea this was still an epidemic in our community.

Here are the facts:

  • Blacks are more than 60% of new diagnosis among all women
  • In 2014, new cases of HIV among Blacks in AZ were 566% greater than new cases among Whites.
    • Blacks are only 4% of the population
  • 22% of all new HIV cases in Arizona were youth aged 13 to 24.
  • 14% of all new HIV cases were adults aged 50 or older.

NEW things in the fight of HIV/AIDs:

PrEP Can Lower Your Risk of Getting HIV by 92%

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a relatively new HIV prevention method, which involves HIV negative people taking HIV medication to help prevent HIV infection. A person on PrEP takes one pill each day to ensure that the medication is always in his/her body. If he/she is exposed to HIV, PrEP can help block the virus from spreading. Several studies have shown that PrEP can reduce the risk of a person getting HIV when taken daily.

Also, If you live in Arizona there are plenty of free locations to go to for testings. There will also be free in home testing coming soon!
